as some of you may recall, i did taxes for several years (and liked it being the bizarre individual that i am). i am still on a mailing list from the IRS for updates. many of these consist of backpatting regarding the increase in e-filing or information about arcane areas of corporate law. however, the latest bulletin had a pointer to an interesting form. the IRS is soliciting ideas of how to reduce the tax burden, not monetarily, but in effort to file:

IRS Office of Taxpayer Burden Reduction Partners with Public to Make Complying with Tax Laws Easier

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service’s Office of Taxpayer Burden Reduction is soliciting recommendations from members of the public on ways to reduce taxpayer burden. Taxpayer burden is defined as the time and money taxpayers spend to comply with their federal tax obligations. An example of taxpayer burden could be the average time and expense required to complete and file a tax form.

of course, the complexity of the current system costs time which is, as we all know, money and also encourages taxpayers to pay others to complete their forms. while this has been a useful income stream for me, it is not the most efficient system. the beauty(?) of the IRS is that there is a form for everything. i thought this form might be one that a lot of people may be interested in completing.

how about send us the w-2 as a form already partly filled out based on the forms we've filed for the last three years or something.

However, i don't feel like filling out another form

a) I'm amused that the IRS's way of investigating how to reduce Taxpayer Burden is to some up with a new form to download, print-out, fill out and then mail in to them.

b) You want simplified? Flat tax rate.
Funny, they seem to get all jittery when someone mentions that...
