i went to the reading to announce the winners of the 2004 NC State Poetry Contest. I felt a bit awkward because i had received a nice little postcard asking me to introduce myself etc as i had gotten to the semifinalist level. all of the finalists/honorable mentions had neat little preprinted nametags so i felt kind of like i was a wannabe, which i was, but that's besides the point. in any case, the winning poem was quite good and should be here after tonight. i really enjoyed the reading by David Bottoms. i had read a few of his poems in various anthologies without realizing this was the same guy. hearing the backstory made the poems all that more valuable to me. i ended up leaving a bit early as i had promised not to stay too long and there were some ominous sky rumblings. must try to find a writing group in raleigh.

i think i'm glad i went. it was tough to get myself to actually go as [livejournal.com profile] h_postmortemus had a rough day at work and sylvia was absolutely napless and i felt like i was abandoning the homefront. hopefully tomorrow we'll be able to have the proper amount of time together. it seems that the week that i'm working the least, we've had the least amount of quality time together.

in work related news, a little over an hour after the new proto-boss was supposed to call me, i called him and he pleaded the mass busyness of end of month closings. i forgave him and we agreed to try again for tomorrow.

argh.

ok, i'm trying to be really careful about not mucking up first publication rights with public poetry postings, but i have to share a snippet of the poem i sent to canada. i was having a bit of writer's block so i decided to look for magazines with themes and see what i could come up with. Descant is looking for poems about venice. i'm not sure i am coming from the angle they are expecting:

The Venusians VS Venice

"...velvet-draped vestibules
Virtually violated by this
Viking of vacuum.
His vicious vassals
Vacillating not-at-all
In their vanquishment
of vintage canals and
Vertiginous statuary..."

ahem. now to do research on who to send this to after descant rejects it ;)
