another day

sylvia had a really good day. she was downright giddy except when she was hungry or needed a new diaper and neither one of those problems is really too hard to fix. i spent a large amount of today just playing and having fun with my baby. i have received a lot of comments about how nice it must be to stay home and play with the baby and to be honest, it's really a lot of work - good, important and enjoyable work, but still work.

i also got a line on a series of temp jobs. there's really not much money in it, but it sounds like fun. i don't really need to pull in too much money to be able to stay home with sylvia. unfortunately, as i was trying to fill out all the form/stuffies sylvia started to getting fussy and i started getting stressed. this was just about the time jeff was due home so i more or less coped and then handed her off to him. i finally got everything done and it looks like i won't really get any assignments for a while, but as long as i accomplish something every day, i don't feel like i'm turning into a couch potato.

on the couch potato front: we finally made the decision to cut cable. it's not only a good idea from a financial standpoint, but from a lifestyle standpoint. we don't have as much time to watch tv and programs are starting to stack up on tivo. this also decreases the casual watching that sylvia incurs which is something very important to me.

it looks like gardening this week will be a bit of a wash. at least a light rain is predicted most of the week, with occasional thunderstorms. it looks like my poor bulbs may be in for quite a wait. i may try to sneak them in during a dry point, but it's not good to work clay when it's wet. at least my new tomatoes will be getting a good start. conditions are going to be ideal for new plantings.

i am hoping the weather will break by friday, unlikely as it seems. i have been trying to get to the plant delights open house. they're only open to the public 4 weekends a year. then saturday we're going to try to head to the beach to expose sylvia to the ocean. it should be quite an adventure, that is if the weather holds.

enough for now. i'm just barely sliding this entry in by midnight, but i felt today was worth recording.

Days with babies...

I'm glad Sylvia had such a nice day for you. Those are the days when everything feels right with the world, no?

I always laugh when people comment on how nice it must be to stay home with the kids and how easy it must be. "Oh, but you can do , right? I mean, it's not like you work!" Um, yeah, I work my behind off, thanks. Just because it's not outside the home and just because I don't get paid for it DOESN'T mean it's not working. Really hard! (Just wait until sylvia becomes a toddler.... it gets a bit more exhausting. More fun, but also more exhausting.)

I think it's great that you're trying to get some temp work. Keep your mind stimulated but still be able to stay home with Sylvia--what a lovely compromise!

I sometimes would like to get rid of cable, but my husband would go through withdrawal ;) Actually, though, we're lucky--it's part of our association dues. We don't actually have to pay extra. I've been making a concerted effort, though, to keep the television OFF much more, much in the way you mentioned the benefit of Sylvia watching less TV with no cable.

I tried to stay home but it just didn't work out. I was going crazy, mostly from isolation, lack of a break from it all, and brain degeneration. I did stay home ten months. Anna and I both seem to have thrived in our school and work pursuits. I did stay home for a week and a half recently and it was a lot more fun than before. Unfortunately, we were both sick. I will always be there for Anna first and then work second. She is getting to an age were she wants to go to school. This morning she leaped out of my arms to join her friends at daycare. She isn't a little baby anymore.

A big cheer for stay-at-home moms!!! I don't know how you do it.
