yesterday was so chock full of good stuff that i didn't have time to write any of it up beyond sylvia's discovery of the letter 'M'. i'm still in shock. here are some more highlights listed in roughly chronological order:
life is good.
- went to mommy & me class. we discussed sleep and apparently there are many babies out there who are sleeping 10-12 hrs which is just unfathomable to me. i felt a bit bad, but still unwilling to use some of the techniques described (mostly involving a lot of crying on babies part). however, after talking with some of the other moms, i felt more reassured. sylvia might not sleep through the night, but i get a lot of compliments on how expressive she is usually quite happy. the teacher commented to me that she had 'utterly failed' on the sleep thing with her two sons (now teenagers) but that they were very secure and self-assured which is a gift i hope to give sylvia.
- went home and
h_postmortemus watched sylvia for a few moments and then went off to see The Hulk. in the meantime, i went over to the neighbors house to hang out with her and her two young sons (3.5 and 14 mos). katherine is great to talk to because she's nice, has two kids, and is a montessori teacher. we agree on many things so i can actually just plain talk to her without worrying getting into nastiness. she said her youngest did not sleep through the night until 7 mos and started all the sudden. very reassuring.
- while at katherine's i had thought i had heard sylvia say something and told her that if she looked at me it would count. well, when i got home, she did. "muhmuhmuhmuh". it's not really mama and she's not really saying it to me, but it feels so good.
- after dinner,
h_postmortemus and i went over to games galoreto meet with some people from TUGA . i've been meaning to get over to games night for quite some time, but busy schedules, pregnancy and an infant had conspired to keep me away. we had a blast.
h_postmortemus, tiffany and i played sloppy seconds which is a messed up freaky game, just the kind i like. we mentioned sheepshead a few times, but no one took us up on our kind offer of indoctrination. after sylvia had had enough of the games we wandered about to see what everyone else was playing. i observed a very cool pyramids game which i can't remember the name of and 6 nimmt. a very simple german game. very cool. i think i'll pick up a deck. next time we're going to try to get there earlier so we can play some of the other games. when we arrived, all the games were pretty much started.
- sylvia did not fall asleep until we were leaving around 10 pm and we were thinking that having worked so hard for her sleep, she might snooze the night through. well, about 20 min after we got home, she woke up with a vengeance, very loud, very displeased with us. she didn't fall asleep again until shortly after midnight - but then she slept through the night YAHOO!.
life is good.
