CENTRAL CITY, Nebr. – Despite trying to come to a stop on the main line in response to a tornado warning, two Union Pacific trains had some of their cars blown over by high winds about 1:30 a.m. Thursday, near this central Nebraska town 20 miles northeast of Grand Island.
An empty coal train, symboled CSLJR-09 of the 10th, went into emergency braking after seven coal cars were blown over, according to UP spokesman John Bromley. The train, bound from Chicago to the Powder River Basin, was not the only one to suffer. Right behind it, westbound intermodal train G2GS-09, bound from Chicago to San Pedro, Calif., had containers blown off some well cars on its train, plus six stack cars were derailed.
The incident blocked both mainline tracks. There were no injuries or hazardous material concerns. One mainline track was reopened at 9:55 a.m. Thursday and the second at 11:40 a.m.
