i have a hard time with this whole disaster. i had heard a particularly persuasive radio article about the inevitable destruction of new orleans by direct hit from a class 5 hurricane. it made sense to me. new orleans is below sea level and when you run the water the wrong way, the levees will break. while loving its architecture and lifestyle, New Orleans was already gone to me. something deep goes *pang* when i think that it may be absolutely gone, but i believe in reconstruction and that much of what new orleans is will be replaced.

that being said, i have some uncharitable feelings for people who could have left and did not. if every person holds the world entire, each person has a responsibility to attempt to preserve that life. when the rangers say go, you go. for those who couldn't, i hold my wrath for the authorities of new orleans who felt that shoving everyone in the superdome was a contingency plan. again, below sea level should mean something. i am sure part of the laissez le bon temps roulez spirit is gone from the town, or rather is still there floating facedown. this is not the third world. we should be able to do better than this.
