[livejournal.com profile] h_postmortemus is home and recovering safely from sinus surgery. i'm not sure if i ever mentioned that the surgery was today, but it was. the surgery started 3 hrs later than originally advertised which led to all sorts of adventures with childcare.

scenario a)
o jeff has surgery while jenn waits very very calmly (really) in the waiting room.
o jeff goes into recovery where he slowly wakes and is poured into the car to go home
o while jeff snoozes in bed, jenn goes to pick up sylvia from school and we have a quiet dinner together. perhaps, i make something for jeff if he is up to it.

scenario b) (reality)
o surgery is 3 hrs late. i get about 5 minutes warning that it is going to be quite late and hustle myself off for a quick burst of poetry class.
o we go to the hospital. jeff (whom i love deeply) sets up a nonstop stream of bitching about the delay, and hospitals in general (elective surgery, his choice) which is fueled to a large extent by lack of food, water & caffeine.
o arrangements are made for me to leave jeff as soon as he is safely in surgery :(, pick up sylvia, take her to the neighbors and then bring jeff home from recovery as soon as possible.
o surgery starts even later than late and it turns out the neighbor had a previous obligation and would not be able to keep sylvia late enough. knowing that sylvia is a tough cookie with a fairly late bedtime, i take the only real choice available and bring her back to the hospital.
o sylvia runs laps in the waiting area.
o sylvia runs laps in recovery (seriously). they 'close' the waiting area for 'day surgery'at 6 and we were not let back into recovery until after 6:30.
o jeff eventually wakes up. he did REAL well with the anesthesia and i think he was enjoying the snooze.
o drive home, trying to go easy on the accel/decel as he's got some nausea. grab an icee on the way home.
o give sylvia a modified sleep routine and some good threats (backed by a promise extorted by the wonderful recovery nurse) and she gets to sleep by 9:30.

jeff is sleeping on the couch so that he can be upright. sylvia is a bit confused by the whole blood/groggy dad thing but we're treating it as something normal and i think she will be even more confident (heaven help us) once she sees daddy all recovered. from the doc's report of the condition of the sinuses, he is going to have a phenomenal improvement.

in other news, NONE of my professors showed to class today, not that i went to more than one of them.

1. intermediate poetry - prof was at AWP (oh sweet irony). i did manage to catch this class before heading to the hospital.
2. french literature - prof emailed about 5 minutes before i was about to leave for class that she had 'la grippe' and class was cancelled. we will not mention that i stayed up till 2am working on the composition which is now due after spring break. nor will we mention the fact that i could not get myself to sit down and work on it until nearly midnight due to some weird anxiety issue.
3. advanced conversation & culture (french) - prof in france making final plans for paris/burgundy study abroad trip - excused!

i always find it ironic when the profs skip more than the students ;).
