Well, that would explain a lot. I can barely speak English...

i've wondered what the parallel between human languages and computer languages might be. it is probably more similar to learning a dead language like latin because there are no pronunciation problems or idioms.

Oh, I don't know if I'd say that there aren't any idioms... ;)

I can see that. Most of the folks I've met who are multi-lingual speak at least three languages. I'm not sure why.

I can currently speak English (relatively fluently), a little Spanish (it comes and goes, can't really explain why as I used to be fluent as a kid), and a little bit of Japanese.

I'd like to get my French back, but I can only read French now, not speak it. I f R gets a job where he's more local, we'll take Japanese lessons together.

Oh yeah, and the multi-lingual folks I know just seem absolutely brilliant. I'm not there by any means, but I would love to be.

I think being multi-lingual makes you use more of your brain because you have to process things differently in different languages. That way it's less likely to fall apart ;-)

languages are like potato chips - that take years to consume. i actually started learning spanish before french and will probably go back to it when i'm done. i'm only aiming for reading comprehension though. then, i think i'll take hindu. it sounds absolutely fascinating and is part of the whole indo-european family so it would not be impossible.

i lay no claim to brilliance as i am still a regular idiot in my french classes. the willingness to be an idiot is the only way to learn, but it does not make it less painful.

From the local language disabled person...

I can't pick up a foreign language to save my life. I just "get" computer languages. To me they are nothing like, but I am wired differently.
