no place like homepage?

what do you use as your home page? more importantly, what type of webpage is it? do you use a neutral search engine page like google, or a news site such as yahoo? i'm still using yahoo and i am really getting sick of it. i want it to be something more active than a google search box, but at the same time, i'm really concerned about the time sink effect of constantly clicking through to see what has changed. so, what do you use? what do you like, and dislike about it? and finally, do you use a neutral page between applications or do you just keep clicking along?

My homepage is Google Mail. I always keep it open and open up other tabs to surf in.

I use excite.com (My Excite) but with it customized. The wallpaper is fish, many of my bookmarks are stored there, my stocks are entered, my cartoons (most web based with the custom link done there,) I got rid of the sports news and put in space news instead, and so forth. Www.excite.com default is blah but it is really customizable. It also updates the news and stocks automatically.

Also, if you use Firefox, you can have multiple home pages. I load with My Excite, Vaxer, and LJ.

At home, I generally use Google Reader, and three LJ friends groups pages open (People, SFW communities, and NSFW communities). Most of what I'm interested in is right there.

At work, I generally use the same thing, minus the NSFW stuff, and plus my "personalized" Google homepage.

My home web page is my personal web page (www.gayleshlafer.com). My work one is my work homepage.

It used to be cnn.com at home, but then I grew egotistical. *grin*

At work I use our libraries' website since that's, you know, where I work and all. ;) At home I use Poetry Daily, just to make sure I remember to look at it every day. I don't usually go back to it between stuff though. In fact, at home I usually have one tab open to gmail, one tab open to my LJ friends list, and a couple other tabs open to other stuff I check frequently. Then when I want to do something different I open up a tab for that and close it when I'm done.

I guess I'm weird. (Hush.)

I prefer to open new windows with a blank page. My go-to page for most searching is Google. However, I do have two Firefox windows filled with tabs. My standard, keep-refreshing contains LJ Friends, posts to comment on, links from other people, Hiveminder (http://hiveminder.com/), Kaboodle (http://www.kaboodle.com/), and now twitter. Another window that I open each morning using the Firefox "open in Tabs" feature on a folder named "Daily" contains the 5 Day Forecast from WRAL.com (http://www.wral.com/weather/5day/), Astronomy Picture of the Day (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html), eDealinfo.com (http://edealinfo.com/), She's Such a Geek (http://www.shessuchageek.com/), Inkling Magazine (http://www.inklingmagazine.com/), SlickDeals.net (http://slickdeals.net/), StealDeals.Net (http://www.stealdeals.net/), The Week Magazine (http://www.theweekmagazine.com/), Woot (http://woot.com/), and ScienceBlogs (http://scienceblogs.com/).
