I am still me. I know that I have been using the same icon for several years now, but this one is just perfect. We shall see if it has as long a run as the Jawa or if I will become one of those mad craaazy people that switch their icons for each post.

In Sanskrit, ancient Indian language (from India), in which the Mahabarata, Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, and other holy Hindu texts (as well as numerous Buddhists texts) were written...
Just as a side note...

and considering this apparent interest in Eastern philophies, [livejournal.com profile] gardenwaltz perhaps you would appreciate my art work, too.

Yeah, I think I've got Sanskrit somewhere after Japanese for languages I'd like to learn[1]. If I had infinite time & energy, Hindu would be next. However, due to practical reasons, I might try to solidify my Spanish knowledge next. I studied it from 1st to 12th grade, but it never took the way that French has. Or... I might go for Italian just because it looks fun. Or... maybe I should just get French down already :).

[1] The tentative dream list.
Spanish
Hindu
Italian
(maybe Latin just for kicks)
Japanese
Sanskrit?

I only speak/read/write English, Portuguese, Spanish and French,in about that order, but, have learned bits and pieces of Greek, Sanskrit, tibetan, Japanese, Hebrew...(I studied and taught comparative world religion and mythology).
I also studied Old English (Beouwulf), and Middle English (Chaucer).

I keep thinking that I should learn Italian, since, being so closely related to my other languages, it should be pretty trivial to learn.
I can already read and understand a good part of it.
I would like to learn Japanese...some of those others.
For me, having a native speaker around with whom I can converse makes a world of difference.

I cheat with music. I look up the lyrics online (if I don't have a CD with the lyrics in the jacket already).
Listening and singing along really helps.

I missed out on Beouwulf. I was told that the only professor who taught it at NC State retired several years before I started. I did study Chaucer/Middle English via Canterbury Tales, but I can't say that it was my favorite work.

Ease of learning is one of the main reasons that I want to learn Italian. The other one is that my husband has said that if we're going to take a family trip to Europe that we have to go to Italy first. He is most definitely not a linguist and so I feel someone should know how to ask where the bathrooms are ;).

Incidentally, please go to http://www.baldwinlinguas.com/empregos.html and fill out an application to work with me, if you are interested.
I've been contacted in the past couple of days for some potentially high volume French translation work and am likely to be seeking additional translators.
