go see this film. it has everything, romance, adventure and downright quirkiness - 'The Old Man of the Midnight Sea' and a flying carpet..

***insert 2 day pause***

this is also a silent film, as its age may have hinted at. however, live music was provided by ben model. the music was wonderful, the sky was clear and i was able to watch the stars come out one by one as the sun fell enough to start the film. there was a soft breeze blowing throughout the evening which helped keep the mosquitos at bay. i will have to dig out the baby book as this film has the distinction of being sylvia's first movie, not that she saw much of it. watching us and the audience was much more interesting, that is when she wasn't eating. all of the practice nursing at night came in handy while we were stretched out on our blanket - absolute decadence. i think a feeding under the stars beats the gliders at babies r us.

douglas fairbanks is a great actor, very athletic. i think he's where a lot of the swashbuckling stereotypes come from. the film was wonderfully restored. i was well prepared to see something grainy with streaks and holes running through, but this could have been a black and white film produced just last week. the special effects were marvelous. primarily because nothing felt very cheesy, until a few effects towards the end. many effects were done the easy way, where they were not trying to fool you, but actually used enormous sets, real tigers and thousands of extras.
