gardening accomplishment

the nap was a good idea. sylvia only slept for a half hour, but then she was hungry again and i slept while i fed her :) i love breastfeeding. she'll never be this easy to feed again. [livejournal.com profile] h_postmortemus returned from the book signing very buzzed and happy. i wished i had gone to see some of the raleigh sci-fi community that i only seem to see at trinoc-con, but i needed the nap. more importantly, when jeff returned, he was able to watch sylvia so i could get my precious tomatoes and eggplants in the ground. the guy i got them from is semi-famous in the area because of his great selection of heirloom veggies, but i was truly impressed. i have grown lots of 'odd' tomatoes and there were many i had never heard of available. so, the tomato and eggplants are all settled in the raised beds.
the cast for 2003:
Tomatoes

  • reif red heart

  • mortgage lifter

  • yellow pear

  • grape

  • cuostralee

tomatoes already in progress:

  • early girl

  • better boy

  • german johnson

Eggplant
  • neon

  • black beauty

  • pingtung long

  • violette de firenze

  • calliope

  • it is truly amazing how much faster and easier veggies are to plant than ornamentals, especially when the raised beds are all set up.

    "Mortgage lifter"?

How on earth did anything get that name, let alone a tomato?

P.S. when's the harvest? I may have to drive up.

as the story goes, this tomato was so incredible that the farmer who created it was able to pay off his whole mortgage. i have been wanting to grow this tomato for a while just for it's wonderful story. earliest tomatoes are hoped for in mid-june. the bulk of the crop will be considerably later.
