i have been trying to figure out what to do with my life for, well, some time now. in fact, i seem to recall an apres nap chat in my preschool in which i realized that i did not want to be a fireman and was fairly sure that it was not possible to be something nonhuman, such as a tiger, when i grew up. i'm burned out on the insurance biz and i am truly enjoying the whole tax thing except for the wee problem that tax season is, at most, 4 months long and there's really only about a month and a half of peak. i'm trying to puzzle out what it is about my past, and current jobs that i do enjoy and then figure out, again, what is reasonable. i'm putting full-time professional writer in the 'tiger' box for now, but i have every intention to work myself up to part-time freelancer. meanwhile...i have given myself some breathing room by deciding to look for another afternoon, evening, weekend gig for the rest of spring and not try to go fulltime, real job, real childcare until may.

the only 'real' job that i can see myself being able to make anything over net is insurance, thus the quest for a new career. real estate intrigues me, i'm going to see what it takes to become an appraiser. like taxes, it's not quite sales, but dealing with the public. it can be scaled back to allow for future tax seasons and can be done either freelance or for an employer. we'll see. time to do more research before the baby wakes.

p.s. my snowman is now visibly melting.

Good Luck!

I have been trying to figure out what I want to do with my life since...errrr..nevermind.

I have given some thought into what I want from my next job. I love being an engineering technical writer. If you have asked me six years what my least favorite job in the world was, it was writer. I was lousy at writing my whole life. I just happen to like the niche of technical writer. Though I still hate business writing (grants, proposals, boring). My fantasy job: Documenting and QA for Mythbusters[1]. It probably does not exist, but if it did...

My point is some people know what they want and they do it. Ed always wanted to program and that is what he does. He is not happy unless he is programming. Me, I was always a Jack-Of-All-Trades-And-A-Master-Of-None. Technical writing is good for that sort of person. I go into a situation and document it, and learn a bit on the side. It is flexible like myself. Find something that works for you. If you end up cruising around some jobs, so be it.

[1] I have a slight fandom crush on Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage with that red hair *drool*. I like men who can blow things up.
